Leisure with children in the city: everything is the playground

Whether Berlin or Passau: every city is worth an adventure. Sometimes you just have to know where to find it. So here are our tips on how to make things out in the city with children an unforgettable experience:

Treasure hunts and scavenger hunts. You can organize these yourself or see if your city offers organized puzzle tours . Either way, you get to know the city better, can work together on a goal - and face an exciting challenge as a family.

Scary tours through the city. Almost every big city and many historic cities offer spooky tours where you can discover the scariest places , secrets of the past and all sorts of mysterious things. Some of them are really scary - and therefore perhaps not suitable for skittish children.

Pleasure tours through the markets and through the small shops in the town. Whether it's the Viktualienmarkt in Munich or the Isemarkt in Hamburg: if you set off together, you can discover delicious things together and learn more about the culinary world of your region - not to mention that you can then use the food you buy for delicious family meals at home can.

Sightseeing . Did you know that many locals often know less about the sights of their hometown than tourists? That's why we warmly recommend the tourist tour through your home country . Whether by sightseeing bus, with a city guide or on your own: Make a list and then set off on a great journey of discovery.

Attend festivals and other events . You can also go on trips with children wherever there are folk festivals, music festivals, adventure fairs or sporting events. Many offers are free or very cheap , after which you can soak up the atmosphere to your heart's content, experience beautiful moments together and let yourself go.

Family city guide. Activities with children are always particularly fulfilling when everyone acts on equal terms. That's why our last adventure-in-the-city tip: Show each other your city! Where does mom like to go for coffee? Which building does dad particularly love? Where do the kids hang out with their friends? Of course it's more suitable with older children, but it's always worth a city tour. Suddenly you see the little one with new eyes - or fall in love with your partner and his/her interests again!

Airports and train stations. Larger airports and train stations in particular are always worth a family trip. Here you can admire the vehicles and flying machines, talk shop, enjoy the local gastronomy and guided tours and infotainment tailored to children - and if you feel like it, you can travel straight away!

Excursions with children into nature: adventures ante Portas

Do you know what one of the best things about big cities is? That you can leave them at any time if it gets too much for you. The surroundings of Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt and Hamburg are full of parks and forests , meadows and floodplains . There are old fortresses and ruins, adventure trails and forest playgrounds, mysterious places and paths that you can explore on foot and by bike everywhere. Here are our tips for exciting excursion destinations with children:

Scary places. You can already tell: we love horror. And there are often a lot of mysterious things to explore near cities big and small. If you do a little research online, you'll find old caves and bunkers, abandoned sanatoriums and haunted forests that you can discover on a day trip with children. For most places, entry is often only permitted with a guide - here, too, you can quickly find the right organizers on the Internet.

Nature trails and wildlife parks. It is often said that city youth have no idea about nature. You can change that: pack up the family and head out into nature. Nature trails bring children and adults closer to the local flora and fauna , and in wildlife parks you can observe many animals up close - and this is more species-appropriate and animal-friendly than in most zoos.

Mountain tours. The perfect excursions with children who have no fear of heights. Thanks to Kraxe, parents can also take small children with them – and then it’s time to “go to the mountains”. And if you don't have any mountains on your doorstep, you can just hike over hills and through valleys and be happy that everything isn't so strenuous. Back on the mountain: A stop with an overnight stay in a mountain hut is an absolute highlight for young and old. So that you can keep up with your kids, you can take a look at our dextrose products for really strenuous tours - for an immediate supply of quickly available carbohydrates!

Knight tournaments and medieval markets. Men and women in armor, hearty food, colorful children's programs and also a few cool ideas for teenagers: at large and small knight tournaments and medieval markets you can unwind, travel back in time , buy fantastic handicrafts and eat delicious food. The Kaltenberg Knights' Tournament is the most internationally famous, but there are tournaments and markets almost every week in every federal state that are somewhat smaller and more personal.

lakes and rivers. Do you have water nearby? Then let’s go! There is a lot you can do with children here. The older ones look forward to rafting , canyoning or stand-up paddling , while the small children look forward to splashing around and collecting stones . Particularly beautiful are places on lakes and rivers (or of course the sea), where organizers have built water parks, restaurants and the like. If you're on a day trip with children, you can also go on a short camping or camping holiday over the weekend.

And action! Whether paragliding, bungee jumping, bobsleighing or horseback riding and motocross rides: If you're heading out into nature, action and adventure sports attract children . On the Internet you will find numerous providers who organize trips with children in the area - for young and old, for adrenaline junkies and more cautious souls. Your companion: our muesli bars - as a reward, for your carbohydrate intake, against the hunger pangs!

Bad weather trips with children : How to save the day

The family trip can be planned as well as you want: if the weather doesn't cooperate , it can literally ruin your whole day. Here are three tips to make every day a special day:

Tip 1: Escape rooms offer you and your family the opportunity to work together on an exciting goal. The principle is simple: you are locked in a room (an escape room) and have to solve puzzles and other tasks in order to be allowed to leave the room again. Escape rooms are now available everywhere, with different levels of difficulty and for almost all age groups. What’s particularly nice is that the escape rooms always have a theme. So you sometimes have to break out of prison, break into a laboratory or steal a treasure. Depending on the provider and the location, the whole thing is not very cheap (around 25 to 30 euros per person), usually takes 60 minutes and can also be experienced with slightly older children.

Tip 2: Indoor sports. If you want to do something with your children, it doesn't always have to be a whole day trip. Take a look at what sporting highlights there are near you ! We probably don't need to introduce classics like the indoor swimming pool or the bowling alley in more detail. But what about unforgettable moments like indoor diving , air duct flying or trampoline jumping ? You can also go high with bouldering in the climbing hall - even small children can try it out here!

Tip 3: Experience culture. Before you throw your hands up: We know that trips with (small) children to dusty museums or art exhibitions can get hairy. That's why we recommend the culture tour in a different way: There are numerous things to do with children that will bring you closer to your city or region and are fun for everyone. These can be spooky tours through the catacombs and cellars of cities or visits to toy or hands-on museums . And of course, very tall buildings are always a good place to take a look at the place where you live. Television and radio towers are the first choice here. Even in bad weather.
