FAQs
Do you sometimes have no motivation? Are you hanging on in the gym, are you doing fitness tomorrow, are you doing housework at the last minute? We know it and it is often completely normal. But don't worry: you can usually find and increase your motivation quite easily. Psychology knows two forms of motivation: extrinsic and intrinsic motivation . Extrinsic motivation comes from outside. These can be possible rewards or recognition (but also, in a negative sense, fear of punishment or shame). Intrinsic motivation is within you. So if you can't find your motivation at the moment, you have two options: you let yourself be motivated externally - or you give yourself a new motivation.
The most classic form of extrinsic reward is recognition and praise , and in professional life it is also salary . In short: If we know that we will receive something for something we do, it can motivate us. This also includes, for example , extrinsic factors such as a delicious snack or a new book that you will buy as soon as you have finally done the laundry. You guessed it: If extrinsic motivation is lacking, you may lose motivation - if your intrinsic motivation is not high enough. Intrinsic reward is the inner satisfaction of tackling or completing something. Be it because you enjoy it, be it because you learn something new or simply feel good when you achieve your goal. But here the journey is also the goal: Intrinsic motivation not only works towards success as a reward, but also results from all the good moments during the activity.
If you want to improve your motivation, you can do this in several ways. However, we always recommend a combination of extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Extrinsic motivation can be small rewards like our minis , energy gums* or school material - just like a round of gaming after an hour of studying or a visit to the massage studio after work. Intrinsic motivation means being motivated by yourself. The flow principle is crucial here. We usually lose motivation when a task is too easy or too difficult . For logical reasons: If the task is too easy, we get bored with it. We quickly become distracted, we don't make any progress, we don't feel like it. The solution here: Make your task a challenge by modifying it slightly. Do you create tables in your sleep? Then set yourself a tight time limit . If the task is too difficult, it puts us off. Who wants to do something that he or she is almost guaranteed to fail at? The motivation to run decreases when it's freezing outside - and the route is far too demanding and long for your fitness level. The solution: Make difficult tasks easier by asking for help, consciously making them easier or dividing them into individual sections (i.e. stage victories). If you want to increase your motivation, you should always make sure to design your tasks in such a way that they are challenging enough , but not overwhelming . We know that this is sometimes not possible. But you will see: Intrinsic motivation is based on feelings of happiness . You can program your body to feel satisfaction while completing tasks. Over time, even less exciting or very hard tasks will become easier and easier for you. The only important thing is that you learn to recognize the journey as a goal - and to complete tasks with curiosity and fun , instead of just seeing the completion of the task as motivation.
